11/13/16 Election Result analysis for those of you who like numbers.
The election results show how divided the US is and I hope will mean that the winning side will take in consideration some of the issues of the losing side. Personally I know that the current Electoral College are the rules of the game and I accept the results. (Since Trump won, I have been mulling over a large number of “might have beens” but will save that for another time.)
Exit polling indicates that most women voted for Clinton and most men voted for Trump; younger voters (under 45) voted for Clinton and older voters for Trump (as always, older voters had higher turnout); minorities (Blacks, Asians, Latinos) for Clinton and Whites for Trump. Protestants voted mostly for Trump, Catholics were more split (45% Clinton, 52% Trump) while Jews and other non Christian religions voted a lot more for Clinton as did the 15% of Americans who stated they had no religion. I'm sorry to see the election activity on Orange Politics is minimal these days. I volunteered at Kings Mill Precinct this morning. By 10 AM about 130 people had voted. The most common question was who were the District Judge candidates. FYI. For NC District Court Judge District 15B, Long is on the ballot but has withdrawn. I hope folks will vote for Sherri Murrell. She spoke at the candidate forums and comes highly recommended by people involved in the local judicial system. The last week I have been in Wake, Allamance and Granville counties. Some voters still think they needed an ID to vote or that if you have a felony conviction you can't vote. I met several 18 year olds who were not registered to vote. Everyone who I talked to said they had either voted early or were going to vote today. Hope it turns out that way.
There are 4 local District Court Judge races. Only Democrats are on the ballot. Two have no competition (Beverly A. Scarlett and Jay Bryan). On the ballot Sherri Murrell has competition (Lunsford Long) but Judge Long has withdrawn from the race but is still on the ballot. Logically everyone should vote for Murrell because if she doesn't win, the current governor could appoint to the future vacancy created by Long. The only real contested race is between Samantha Cabe and Sam Cooper. Tomorrow 9/29/16 there is another forum for the district judges sponsored by Orange Democrats.
REMINDER: District Court Judicial Candidates Forum
The Orange County Democratic Party will be sponsoring a candidate forum with candidates for the Long and Anderson seats on our local District Court. Candidates for these seats include Samantha Cabe and Sam Cooper (Anderson seat) and Sherri Murrell (Long seat).
This forum will take place Thursday, September 29 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at the Lake Hogan Farms Clubhouse (101 Commons Way, Chapel Hill).
This event will be moderated by OCDP Chair Matt Hughes and OCDP Vice Chair Susan Romaine.
On June 7 North Carolina has a statewide nonpartisan primary for Supreme Court justice, as well as congressional primaries. Orange County is now totally in the 4th District, where David Price has no primary. Democrats and Libertarians get just the court ballot, while Republicans (plus unaffiliated who want to vote in the GOP primary) also get the Congressional. Polls on June 7 are open the usual 6:30 am to 7:30 pm
Regular voter registration is already over, but at early voting same day registration and reporting of address changes is allowed

Orange County has just two items on the ballot, a Supreme Court nonpartisan primary to narrow the field from 4 to 2, and a GOP primary in the 4th Congressional District. In the former all Orange County residents can vote, in the latter just Republicans and unaffiliated (unaffiliated can vote in that primary regardless of whether they voted in the Democratic or Republican primary March 15)
For Supreme Court there are 4 candidates:
Bob Edmunds, a Greensboro Republican who is the incumbent Justice. I've known Bob 45 years, and he contributed to my 1975 Chapel Hill mayoral campaign. More recently he's voted consistently in lockstep with the 4-3 GOP majority on the NC Supreme Court.
Mike Morgan, a black Democrat from Wake County. Mike has been a superior court judge the last 8 years and was a district court judge before that.
Sabra Faires, an unaffiliated voter in Wake County, the plaintiff in litigation that overturned the up or down retention election ordered by the 2015 General Assembly and forced a more normal election
Daniel Robertson, a Davie County Democrat. I know nothing about him
It's Primary Day. We vote today in primaries for Orange County Board of Commissioners for District 1, District 2, and At-Large. Orange County voters are also voting to fill seats on their Board of Education.

It's the season for candidate forums. Yesterday, the Orange County Democratic Party and the Orange County Democratic Women held their forum for District 1 and at-large Candidates for the Orange County Board of Commissioners. The event was held at the Lake Hogan Farms club house. We live-tweeted the forum.

Five candidates are running for the Orange County Board of Education in the upcoming election on March 15th. Unlike the several primary election items on the ballot, the school board race is a nonpartisan general election. The winners will take office in June.

- Unexpired 2-year term (1 seat): John D. Hamilton, Michael H. Hood
