Here is the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools’ plan for school reopening Note the first week 1/4 of High School kids attend each day and then they do online learning for the first part of the semester. Middle and Kindergarteners do a hybrid schedule.

So CHCCS schools will not reopen May 15. Online teaching will continue. Of course, students will not learn as much. I hope the libraries open soon for kids use.

President Trump’s recent decision regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has caused a heightened sense of concern for many in our community. There are still unanswered questions and increased anxiety over what the future holds.
Please know, NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN OUR SCHOOLS! Our schools are safe places where children can learn, play and grow. While government leaders debate the legal ramifications and potential appeals, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools remains – as always – committed to the safety and protection of our children.
We continue to welcome everyone, regardless of how they got here. If a student resides within the boundaries of our school district, then we will provide that child with a world-class education. We never ask about the immigration status of a student or family. In fact, we are not allowed to ask, nor do we have any desire for that information.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools understands the value of strong leadership. And for a school system, that leadership starts with the Board of Education.
With the candidate filing period underway, the school district is planning an information session for any community members who might be considering a run for the Board.
The session will take place on Tuesday, July 18 from 4-5 p.m. at Lincoln Center – the school district’s central office, located at 750 South Merritt Mill Road. All interested are welcome to attend.
“We wanted to offer an opportunity for potential candidates to learn more about the future direction of the school system and how Board members can move the district forward,” said Superintendent Pam Baldwin. “This is a non-committal meeting for the purpose of providing information and answering questions.”

Seven people applied for the vacancy on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education created when Michelle Brownstein resigned last month.
I attended the meet and greet forum for school board candidates at the library tonight. Two arrived late. Also Al Baldwin spoke. He is a retired school teacher (we both worked at Chapel Hill High School and he also worked at East CHHS). He announced he is running as a write in candidate because he is very disturbed about what is happening to teachers in the district. He noted that many are afraid to speak up about concerns that they have about education at their schools and in the district. I look forward to hearing more from him.
Education is a critical enabler of individual success and community growth. The CHCCS board serves an important role in setting policies and creating an environment that enables learning. I would like to be one of the seven board members who influence public education in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School district.

When Orange County commissioners approved plans this year for a $125 million school bond vote in 2016, it passed with little public input, scant public outreach and one absent county commissioner. Now some county residents are calling for commissioners to reconsider their priorities, particularly their decision to exclude public-housing funding from the deal.
At this point, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, in a 4 to 2 votes, voted to only include funds for schools that will go before the voters in 2016.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools will hold an information session for anyone interested in running for the Board of Education on Wednesday, June 17 from 6-7:30 p.m. The session will take place at Lincoln Center, the district’s Central Office, located at 750 S. Merritt Mill Road in Chapel Hill.
Four seats will be up for election in November. Potential candidates will meet with district administrators and current Board members to learn about the expectations and responsibilities of serving, as well as some of the large upcoming projects that will require considerable Board attention in the coming years.
The filing period begins Monday, July 6 at 8 a.m.
