Historical accuracy - yes! I've said it before and I'll say it again: anyone who thinks removing confederate memorials is a good idea is just as foolish as anyone who thinks waiving a confederate flag is a good idea. The flag is clearly and irrevocably awash in racism. It was *created* to fly in battle in a war that was about slavery; it was *created* to rally troops to fight to keep slavery alive in the South. It was, pure and simple, in support of the wrong side of history; a Bad Cause.
The Chapel Hill Town Council was to continue its discussion this evening about how to fund the extension of sewer service to the Historic Rogers Road Neighborhood, in its first meeting of the 2014-2015 session. However, town staff is again recommending a continuation of the public hearing.

Did you know that visitor spending in Chapel Hill and Orange County accounts for over $160 million in economic impact ever year? Tourism is a clean business that creates jobs and tax revenue that helps keep our county the amazing place it is. I was appointed to represent the Town Council on the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitor's Bureau at the start of this year, and am committed to increasing the economic impact from tourism over this year.
To celebrate the great visitor and tourist attractions in Orange County, I'm headed on a stay-cation over Memorial Day weekend. I'll be packing my bag on Friday and won't return until Monday afternoon, but I'll never be more than 25 miles away from my home. I'm spending Friday night in Carrboro, will be visiting Hillsborough and Northern Orange on Saturday, and will be finishing up in the southern part of heaven on Sunday.
Our theme this year is "Weaving Communities: histories, homes, lives." We'll be featuring oral history performances on Northside and Rogers Rd history, presenting community honors for all this year's successes, and providing a preview of our new history exhibit. And of course, we will be enjoying kids' games and festivities, music, dancing, and of course, delicious food (support from Mama Dips, Vimala's, Bread and Butter, Open Eye, and our grillmaster Calvin).
Come celebrate the end of the school year, the coming of spring, and the community we are ALL a part of Saturday, May 3rd!
Whether you can come for the entire event or just 20 minutes. come join us. This is an incredible gathering of folks from all corners of Chapel Hill/Carrboro, from the university, and beyond. We have so much to be thankful for, and so much to celebrate.

OrangePolitics was never just me, even though some people like to see it that way. When I started this site over 10 years ago I had help setting up the software, and many friends posted entries regularly including local activists, newspaper columnists, and elected officials. There were always a few people I could count on to write some great blog posts, or help monitor the site for spam. After years of sporadic support from a rotating cast of bloggers, Damon Seils encouraged me to formally create a proper editorial board for OrangePolitics in 2011.
We recruited stellar activists like Molly De Marco, Jason Baker, and Erin Crouse to join Damon and me in becoming The OP Posse. We recruited Jeff Miles while still a UNC student, lost Erin and Jason to grad school, and then were very fortunate to be joined by Travis Crayton.
Long before European settlers came here, Native Americans lived in the area that is now Orange County. Native Americans created a prominent village on the banks of the Eno River—centuries before the place came to be called Hillsborough. Through the village of the Occaneechis ran a well-established path—a path which the Europeans called the Indian Trading Path, the Catawba Path, the Old Trading Path, or the Western Trading Road. In its full extent, the Trading Path ran from the vicinity of Petersburg, VA, to Mobile, AL.
More locally, the Trading Path had a well defined route from the Eno River to the Haw River. West from the Eno River, it more or less followed the current route of Old NC 10, Bowden Road, and Old Hillsborough Road to the present site of the Hawfields Presbyterian Church on NC Hwy 119.
It appears that as far as I can see on the political scene that there is a civil war here in orange county between liberal democrats and conservative republicans. Where are the moderates of both parties. Which of the current candidates of either party declare that he or she is a moderate liberal democrat or moderate conservative republican . Perhaps I might declare I"M a moderate liberal republican. Gary Kahn
Hi all, this will be my final blog during the rest of the election season. I have enjoyed attending CHTC meetings during the last 2.5 years. Since moving here I have been vocal on a number of town issues that have not received the attention it deserved . I have voiced an opinion from the cell phone ban which I was in favored of, I wanted a private investigator for the Yates Building incident , which the CHTC shot down, I felt that the signs for the bus ads which were STOP AID TO ISREAL were politically incorrect, and happy that CHTC change it to their current policy on the issue . I sat through the Rogers Road and other community issues as well, Such as Obey Creek, Central West, the Ram Plaza area, and Glen Lennox. I sat through town ordinances evaluation such as the food truck issue. So therefore im not exactly the new kid in town. In conclusion I hope you consider all the above when choosing to vote for me in this years election. Thank you. Gary Kahn The above is from election of 2013
