local news

I asked facebook Durham Herald Sun about local news coverage and this is what they sent me.

The McClatchy Co. owns the N&O and late last year bought the Herald-Sun. About a month ago, the N&O closed our Chapel Hill office and moved the news and advertising staff to the Herald-Sun's office near Northgate Mall in Durham. The CHN and all the N&O's 10 community papers are changing (look for an announcement later this week). Our goal is to make the Herald-Sun the leading news source in print and online for Durham, Orange and eventually northern Chatham counties. The two papers -- the N&O and HS -- will share content in print and online. Feel free to call me at 919-829-8950 if you have more questions.

Roses from the Chapel Hill News

LIBERAL DEMOCRAT VS. CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN ! IS THERE A MODERATE IN THE HOUSE?

It appears that as far as I can see on the political scene that there is a civil war here in orange county between liberal democrats and  conservative republicans. Where are the moderates of both parties.  Which of the current candidates of either party declare that he or she is a moderate liberal democrat or moderate conservative republican . Perhaps I might  declare I"M  a moderate liberal republican.  Gary Kahn

What Is A Liberal Republican

The Orange County Republican Party defines it self as its 2 favorite presidents are Abe Lincoln and Ronald Reagan. At a recent party meeting this issue came up, and I said openly to this group my favorite Republican Presidents were Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt. There  response was  it makes sense a Republican from Chapel Hill would think that.  I said my third favorite was President Eisenhower. Gary   Kahn

NC Voter Guide link

The NC Voter Guide is online. If you enter your address you can see a ballot and different candidate positions. You can also listen to the candidate's voice. (I must admit, I did not make the most exciting recording ever heard.) http://c3.thevoterguide.org/v/nccve13/build.do.  Enjoy.

Indy endorsements are out!

And I can't say I disagree with them much. (But I do have some quibbles. More about that when we post our annual Endorsements Thread soon.) Here's an overview of their picks (which you already know if you follow us on Twitter):

  • Chapel Hill Town Council: Sally Greene, Ed Harrison, Maria Palmer, George Cianciolo
  • CHCCS School Board: James Barett, Michelle Brownstein, Andrew Davidson
  • Carrboro Board of Alderpeople: Randee Haven-O'Donnell, Jacquie Gist, Sammy Slade
  • Hillsborough Town Board: Kathleen Ferguson, Jennifer Weaver

To learn more about all these folks see our spreadsheet of candidates at orangepolitics.org/elections-2013/candidates

I love that the Indy now posts the full text of the candidate questionnares. Those things take a LOT of work to complete.
