Orange Leaders Rally Against Amendment One

Join Orange County elected officials on Saturday, April 28, at 10:00 am in front of Carrboro Town Hall for a short program describing the harms of Amendment One.

Carrboro mayor Mark Chilton, Chapel Hill mayor Mark Kleinschmidt, Hillsborough mayor Tom Stevens, Orange County Board of Commissioners chair Bernadette Pelissier, and Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board chair Mia Burroughs will make brief remarks about why they oppose the amendment.

They will be joined by numerous members of their respective boards. Afterward, the group will enter Town Hall to participate in early voting.

Would love to know who in the County Commissioners, School Boards and Town Boards are actually FOR the amendment and who are AGAINST it.

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen unanimously supported a resolution on August 23, 2011, in opposition to the legislation that placed the amendment on the ballot.The Chapel Hill Town Council unanimously supported a similar resolution on September 12, 2011, and unanimously supported a resolution in opposition to the amendment itself on March 12, 2012. The Orange County Board of Commissioners unanimously supported a resolution in opposition to the amendment on January 24, 2012.

I am against Amendment One. I liked Nancy Oates' (http://chapelhillwatch.com/2012/03/12/waving-our-values/) and John Hood's (http://www.carolinajournal.com/jhdailyjournal/display_jhdailyjournal.htm...) analyses and rationale. I have not heard a rationale to support the amendement that is not based on a religious argument. Are there any?

I have heard the argument that opposite-sex couples are best for children. Of course, I have not heard evidence to support this.

...Then what am I missing here? The Orange County Board of County Commissioners are suppose to be representing ALL county residents, and I know a lot of folks who support and oppose this amendment... I'm sure after election day, we will probably see that not everyone in the Town of Chapel Hill, nor the Town of Carrboro will be voting against this amendment... Some folks don't feel very "represented" right now.

Lydia Lavelle, of the Carrboro Board of Aldermen, arranged this
event. It was moving and inspiring. I have never been prouder than I
was yesterday to serve as an elected official in Orange County, NC.
