Winter Weather Update - Morning Roadway Conditions - Chapel Hill

Morning Roadway Conditions - Chapel Hill

Overnight, Town of Chapel Hill Public Works Department and NCDOT crews applied salt and sand to the primary roads. Crews have started plowing snow from the primary streets.

The police department responded to one minor motor vehicle accident overnight. However, drivers should continue to use caution this morning due to slippery conditions on roadways. Drivers should slow their speed and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

Chapel Hill Transit reports that all routes are running on regular schedules today although there may be some delays due to traffic and road conditions. All other Town of Chapel Hill services and facilities will operate on a normal schedule today.

For more information during inclement weather, residents should monitor local media, the official Town website at www.townofchapelhill.org or call (919) 968-2861.

blog software question

This question has nothing to do with the weather.I've found that when a thread extends past 1 page, clicking on the link will no longer take me directly to the comment. Normally, I use Firefox, but I've also tried IE and had the same problem. Is there a setting I need to adjust or is this a problem with the blogging software?

Drupal (the software that runs this site) breaks the comments into multiple pages when they cross a certain threshold. Unfortunately, it's not smart about making the comment's permalink reflect this.

In OP's case the default is 90 comments per page. But registered users can change this setting by selecting your own preferences at the top of the comment section (bottom of the post).

On a related note, the rich text editing tools that usually appear at the top of the box where we compose comments and posts has recently disappeared for me. Are others still seeing it?

That solves the problem. I still see the rich text editing tools (FireFox 3.0.6).

Roads OK - Drivers Cautious

I drove the backroad (Old Erwin) to Durham this morning around 9AM. It was for the most part reasonably clear but a few spots still had some ice/snow on them. Traffic was light but tended to back up a little behind the occasional 'super-cautious' driver. Was 27F on the way in which means if it stays cold (as predicted) the roads will refreeze where they aren't salted. Tomorrow will be problematic (black ice) if people get overconfident with what they think are clear roads. If everyone who needs to be out (I did; two grant applications due in by tomorrow) takes their time and thinks about what they are doing we should have a minimum of accidents. Drive Safely!

Based on current weather conditions and forecasted temperatures, Orange County Government Offices will be closed today, Monday, March 2, 2009.

Closures are for all non-emergency county government services including senior centers.

Please monitor local media outlets or call the County’s main switchboard at (919) 732-8181 for any updates.

If you must travel, use extreme caution when driving on ice and snow. Watch for refreezing and black ice as temperatures drop.

Murphy's Law: if you're wondering whether trash will be collected on a snowy morning, the trash truck will come by just as you're pulling on boots to take the trash barrel out, "just in case."

Trash pick-up in Carrboro as of one minute ago ... business as usual after our Public Works people worked all night clearing snow. They're running an hour or so behind of schedule, for understandable reasons. The same folks operate the town's one or two snow plows, which I think hook onto the heavy trucks they use for other purposes depending on circumstances. I'm not sure if TOC has salt-applying machinery.

Closed session rescheduled

This just in from Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools:

Closed session rescheduled The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education was scheduled to meet in closed session this morning, Monday, March 2, 2009, following the Legislative Breakfast at Lincoln Center. The Legislative Breakfast and closed session were canceled as a result of inclement weather. The closed session to discuss a personnel matter has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 3, at 4:30 pm at Lincoln Center.

Town of Chapel Hill Overnight Preparations At this time, all of the public maintained streets within the Chapel Hill town limits are passable. The Town of Chapel Hill Public Works Department has applied fifty five tons of salt on bridges, streets, and at key facilities. The police department responded to two minor motor vehicle crashes today. It is expected that refreezing will occur this evening and overnight in locations where water tends to stand or flow across the street. Therefore, motorists should exercise caution and be aware of the potential for slippery conditions and black ice. Motorists on the roadway early tomorrow morning should continue to use caution and they should allow extra time to reach their destinations. The Chapel Hill Public Library and all Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation facilities will close at 6:30PM tonight. All Town of Chapel Hill services and facilities will operate on a normal schedule tomorrow. Chapel Hill Transit will run normal service tomorrow but riders should prepare for potential delays depending on traffic and road conditions. Updated Town of Chapel Hill Road ConditionsOvernight, the Chapel Hill Public Works Department responded to several reports of black ice. Salt and sand have been applied to those roadways. Patches of black ice have been reported on the following streets:*Weaver Dairy Road Ext near the intersection with Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. *Old Durham Road near the intersection with Fordham Blvd. *Intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Hillsborough Street Reports indicate that there are still a number of areas where standing water has frozen. Drivers should allow themselves plenty of time to reach their destinations this morning. Decreased driving speeds and not following vehicles too closely should help reduce crashes. All Town of Chapel Hill services and facilities will operate on a normal schedule today. Chapel Hill Transit will run normal service today but riders should prepare for potential delays depending on traffic and road conditions.
