Keep your eyes on the Board of Elections website starting at noon today. Since there are a number of candidates that have already declared to the media, I expect them to come out strong and try to scare off potential competitors quickly. It will be interesting to see in which districts some of them choose to run, especially incumbent Valerie Foushee.

I am going to be very busy with work (again, ug) so please post any new additions to that page in the comments here. Links to candidate websites are especially appreciated. :-)

I think the interesting race to watch will be Carey versus Kinnaird in District 23.

I'm assuming we'll start to see answers to these questions trickle in over the next few hours to weeks, but...

Any guess to which district Valerie will file in? How about Bernadette Pelissier?

Heard any rumors about elected officials at another level looking to move up (not to characterize town/school boards as less important by any means...)? I can't believe we're already into the filing period with fewer interested candidates than available seats, especially after all the noise about adding the seats in the first place.

Is that a campaign announcement?

Tommy works for a pharmaceutical company. I know that he is very active in his neighborhood and I think he is an officer in his association. I had forgotten that his neighborhood is even in OC.

Kind of a curious thing from Mr. McNeill in the DTH this morning:

Tommy McNeill, a Democrat who lives in the Eno Woods subdivision in Durham, filed for the District 2 seat Monday.

McNeill declined to comment on his platform issues without his campaign manager present.

Neloa Jones

In case folks didn't catch it, Neloa Jones is one of the leading voices of the Rogers Road neighborhood. It's about time that community put forth it's own candidate to ensure their concerns get heard. The question will be whether Neloa plans to address the whole range of issues that the Commissioners handle, or will she just focus on raising the critical environmental and social justice issues which are overdue for a frank, public discussion.

And as Gerry noted, Mary Wolff appears to be the spouse of Kevin Wolff, who has run unsuccessfully for Chapel Hill Mayor twice. Cute that they are both running for the same seat in the the primaries of different parties. It would certainly be amusing to see a couple running against each other in the general election, but I expect the losing streak to continue for the entire household.

Is this a "If we win both primaries, then one of us will surely win the general" situation or is it more of a "If you run for office again, I swear I'll run against you" situation?

It's two people who live together yet disagree on how the community should be governed. Couldn't we at least give Mary Wolffe (who could be a daughter or a sister or some other female relative) a chance to speak before making negative predictions about her intent?

Kevin Wolff has stated in the past that he lives with his wife and two elementary school aged children. The Citizen seems confident enough to call Mary his wife.

I'm curious if the Board of Elections page misspelled her name, which I've now seen as both Neola and Neloa. If they didn't, then the Chapel Hill News spelled it wrong when she wrote an editorial in January. Regardless of how she spells her name, I'm pretty sure they got her address wrong. I was up on Rogers Rd touring the landfill yesterday as a part of the Campus Y Social Justice tour, and noticed that there is a Purefoy Drive up there, which makes a lot more sense than Purefoy Road, which is down off of Mason Farm Road.

However, "Neloa" is the correct spelling.

It's a very obscure literary name--somewhat kidding here since very few have ever heard of the author, Vardis Fisher, other than a UNC-CH English Department Chair.  The chair of the department at the time just happened to have written his dissertation on this author when I was one of his students.  I was amazed my first day in his class when he read my name, looked up at me, and said, "I know where your name comes from."

"Neloa" was a real person in Vardis Fisher's life, a woman he desperately loved, whose real name was "Leona"--hence, the fictional character he created named "Neloa."  My parents read this $0.35 grocery-store paperback just prior to my birth.

Misspelling "Neloa" as "Neola" is quite common

And I am very used to it; it's happened all my life.  At the end of the news column, my name is spelled correctly.

I am actually much more concerned about the incorrect address and have already informed the Board of Elections.  According to their director, however, the filing form correctly lists Purefoy Drive.  The office nevertheless is checking into the error.

With Mary Wolff running in the Democratic primary at-large, and perennial candidate Kevin Wolff (of the same address as Mary) as the GOP nominee in that at-large commissioner race, would it be correct to say this seat might be thrown to the wolves?
